“My million trivial but life-interfering-with medical problems… taken seriously and resulted in actual diagnosis and actual treatment plan… non-scary, trans-friendly, skilled and interested in helping. Katrina’s needles didn’t even hurt–and the treatment was much more relaxing and friendly than my visits in the past to …acupuncture.” -L.B.

Katrina has been at the forefront of acupuncture and integrative medicine for the queer and trans community for as long as I’ve know her… She was always the “go-to” person for information in how to best support the LGBTQ+ community with acupuncture and herbs. Her education and skill in creating hormone balance and promoting optimal reproductive health goes beyond that of your average acupuncturist – she is truly among the best.” -M.J.

Frequently Asked Questions:

  • What is Acupuncture?
    • Acupuncture is an ancient holistic system that brings patients back into balance by fixing the root of a problem rather than just the symptoms. Some acupoints trigger a release of calming hormones, some rewrite pain pathways, some awaken the immune system, have anti-inflammatory effects, or increase circulation. Together, they help your nervous systems switch from ‘fight or flight’ (stress) mode into ‘rest and digest’ (healing) mode. This helps you keep calm, sleep well, build your immune system, repair cellular damage; and it does wonders for your overall mind-body connection. Most people notice their sleep and baseline energy levels steadily improving, better digestion, and an overall sense of relaxation, in addition to improvement in your main areas of concern.

  • Is there parking at your clinic?
    • There is plenty of free parking on the surrounding streets and metered parking directly in front of the entrance. Watch our for street sweeping on Tuesdays and park accordingly.
  • Is your clinic accessible?
    • Tables can be raised or lowered for your convenience. The 6323 Telegraph location has an accessble entrance and treatment rooms, however the restroom is small and has two steps up to the door. The entrance may be too narrow for very large power chairs.
    • We are body/size-positive, and LGBTQI-2s inclusive. We do not discriminate with regard to age, race, class, ability, sexual orientation, gender, or gender expression, etc.
  • Is your clinic scent-free/allergy friendly?
    • The clinic is fragrance-sensitive, but uses ‘smokeless’ (low scent) moxibustion (burning mugwort), topical herbs, and essential oils. These are optional during your treatment. Please be respectful to others who may be sensitive to fragrances, including pregnant people, people with migraines, asthma, allergies, COPD, or MCS, by not wearing perfumes or scented products for your treatment.
    • Vegan, kosher/halal/etc, and allergy friendly custom herbal formulas are available on request.
  • What if I don’t want a particular treatment or a particular area of my body needled?
    • If you have specific concerns about the treatment or if you are not comfortable with certain areas of your body being touched or needled, please let me know. If you need to remain seated rather than lying down, are more comfortable on your side, would prefer to have your hands free during treatment, or have other concerns, please let me know during the intake and I will make sure your needs are accommodated.
  • Does acupuncture hurt?
    • You may feel a tapping or slight pricking sensation on needle insertion, but most people feel nothing at all. If you have any pain or discomfort, speak up so that I can make your treatment as relaxing and comfortable as possible.
  • How long does the appointment last?
    • Appointments last about 50 minutes. You should arrive 10-15 minutes early to your first appointment to fill out intake forms if you have not already filled them out electronically.
  • How should I feel after my appointment?
    • After each treatment, you may feel relaxed or energized, but most importantly you should feel good! The first time you have acupuncture it’s important to get extra sleep, drink more water, take some time for self-care, and eat a healthy meal. Take care of yourself to support the healing that is going on at deep levels of your body. After subsequent appointments your body will be more adjusted to treatment and you should be able to continue regular daily activities directly after treatment, though it’s always important to drink plenty of water to support the healing process.
  • What should I wear to my appointment?
    • Loose fitting comfortable clothes that provide access up to your elbows and knees. You are welcome to bring a change of clothes or use the gowns we provide.
  • Can my partner/child/friend/caregiver come to my appointment?
    • Ideally you’ll come to your appointment alone so we can spend the valuable time we have together focusing on YOU. However, you may bring a friend, family member or support person with you if you need specialized assistance during your appointment. Please be aware that you’ll need to lay mostly still for about 30 minutes so please don’t bring a small child without another adult present to attend to them. I may ask your support person to leave the room for a brief moment during the intake in case there is any sensitive information you’d like to share without them present.
  • What does acupuncture do?
    • Almost everything! Because acupuncture is holistic, all body systems are affected and healing in one are of your body transfers to healing in the rest of your body as well. Though acupuncture is most well known in the west for treating pain, it has been used in China for many thousands of years for all kinds of internal medicine and healing.
  • Are Chinese herbs safe?
    • I’ve put in countless hours of research to find the highest quality herbs sourced from the most highly reputable manufactures. The herbs we prescribe are tested for contaminants and proven safe for consumption. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, have allergies, or are taking other medications, we will discuss whether it is appropriate for you to take herbs.
    • We have a full pharmacy of encapsulated formulas and customized powdered teas. We also stock tinctures, western herbs, and supplements related to hormone care.
  • How long will I need treatment?
    • Most acute conditions see marked improvement within just a few visits and may need treatment 2-3 times a week initially. Chronic conditions may take longer but need less frequent sessions. A general guide is that for each year you have had a problem, it will take about one month of weekly treatments for that issue to improve. As conditions improve, you can come in less often.
  • Do you take insurance?
    • I do bill insurance and accept most PPO plans. You are also welcome to use your FSA/HSA (health savings) accounts to pay for treatments.

Payment Policy. In respect for our intentions to offer high quality healthcare at affordable prices, we ask for 24 hours advance notice to cancel or reschedule an appointment. Per our payment policy, all appointments that are cancelled with less than 24 hour notice, as well as missed appointments, will be charged the full amount of the visit. This amount will be charged to your credit card on file, or billed to you to be paid prior to your next appointment. Exceptions are given for emergencies. All services and herbs purchased are nonrefundable. No refunds will be provided for the full or partial price for any unused services, packages, or gift certificates purchased. We are not currently participants of any insurance network (in other words we are considered “Out-of-Network” providers). If you have out-of-network acupuncture benefits, we would be happy to bill insurance for your visits. You are also welcome to use your FSA/HSA (health savings) accounts to pay for treatments. Fragrance Policy. The clinic is fragrance-sensitive, but uses moxibustion (burning mugwort) and essential oils, which are optional during your treatment. Please be respectful to others who may be sensitive to fragrances, including pregnant people, people with migraines, asthma, allergies, COPD, or MCS, by not wearing perfumes or scented products for your treatment.

Non-Discrimination Policy:

We are body/size-positive, LGBTQI-2s inclusive, poly and kink-aware, and sex worker friendly. We do not discriminate with regard to age, race, class, ability, sexual orientation, gender, or gender expression, etc.
